Sicily is a region located in the south of Italy. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Here there is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. In this area the volcanic activity is very strong: the island is located on the border between the Eurasian and the African Plate. Sicily was colonized and conquered by many populations since 750 BC: the Greeks were the first ones, followed by the Romans, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Normans, the Bourbons. The Reign of Italy was proclaimed in 1861 including also Sicily. The island is very large and rich in archaeological sites, art and culture. Tourists are attracted by the history and the natural beauties: the climate is warm and from April to October is possible to visit the coasts and appreciate the beautiful sea. Here there are images taken in summer 2011 during a tour all around the western part of Sicily: the categories include Palermo, Agrigento and the famous Valle dei Templi. Sicily photos also include small fascinating cities like Monreale, Cefalu, Marsala and Castellammare, the Aegadian Islands. The Sicilian cuisine is delicious: tuna fish and swordfish, aubergines, fruit, ricotta cheese, are some of the many special ingredients. Among the sweets do not forget cannoli and cassata.
