agave

The agave belongs to the family of agavaceae. It has spines on its leaf borders; the yellow flowers blossom on tall panicles. It is cultivated for ornamental use, for its fibres employed by the weaving industry and for its sap. By distillation of the sap a spirit called mezcal is produced: the mezcal is known as tequila.
