
The banyan, or East India fig tree, belongs to the family of moraceae trees; its peculiarity are the branches growing towards the ground forming secondary trunks. It is also named strangler fig since it often develops from a seed brought by a birds on another tree: the banyan grows rapidly stifling the other plants. This tree is sacred for the India: Lantau is said to have been enlightened while meditating under a banyan.
