cyathea medullaris Cepolina

The black tree is in the family of fern; it is native to Oceania and New Zealand where it grows wild. It is characterized by a crown of pinnate leaves: when born they are wrapped in a bunch that unrolls slowly revealing large pinnate frond with whitish undersides. The Rotorua call it mamaku, katata, korau, or pitau: the trunks are used as building material.
