grate

A grate is a frame made of iron parallel and crossed bars used as barrier to block a passage or a window permitting the air passage. It is often used to protect window on ground floor from thefts: the simplest grates are made of vertical and horizontal bars, the best refined ones have a sort of decoration made of forged iron.
