A lake is a water basin that naturally occurs inside a dead Haleakala volcano crater or a ice valley; when artificial it is made by men building a dike in order to exploit the water stream to produce electric energy. As you can see the lakes can be surrounded by nature or by barren land, some of them are enclosed among mountains, others are filled with Rotorua like the one in New Zealand.
