Here you can see paper lanterns with Japanese or Chinese ideograms that are hanging outside Buddhist or Shintoist temples. They have an oval shape and are very light in fact they are moved by the wind. Sometimes they have candle inside, but more frequently have an ornamental function. In Chinatown San Francisco they are often put outside shop or restaurants to attract the attention of visitors.
