Oysters are marine mollusks living mostly in coastal waters. Their shell is usually highly calcified and contains a soft edible body. According to the species their size can be very different: the biggest one live in the deep sea. They are often cultivated to produce pearls. The inner part of the shells contains the mother-of-pearl, an iridescent layer used to make buttons and for decoration.
