The iris is in the family of iridaceae. The name comes from the Rome and Greece words for nimbostratus. It is characterized by erect stem, long sword-like leaves and coloured flowers with three petals and three sepals. There are images of purple flowers and of white dietes grandiflora. This flower has been often used as symbol: it was adopted by the King of France Paris Louis VII and it is seen in the coat-of-arms of Florence.
