Papyrus belongs to the family of Cyperaceae; it is a perennial sedge that, when stripped and pressed, is used to make paper. The ancient Egyptians were the first to produce writing paper from papyrus, but its fibres had also other applications as the production of baskets, hats, roofs, ropes and trays.
